‘Letter of Petition’ (ज्ञापन–पत्र) Submission to Political Parties to Ensure At Least 33% Women Participation in the New Cabinet

Jagaran Nepal in coordination with other Women Rights Organization submitted (on 2nd of August, 2016) a ‘Letter of Petition’ to Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal (Moist-Centre), Rastriya Prajatanja Party (RPP) and other parties who are going to make a coalition government. The purpose of this program was to create a collective pressure to ensure at least 33% women participation (if not equal participation) in the new cabinet- Council of Ministers.

Though women’s equal participation had not been ensured in past Governments/Ministers, even there were hardly 33% women ministers in previous cabinets. The major political parties expressed time and again their commitments to ensure at least 33% women’s participation (including in decision making level) in their party structure and even in the governments. However, their commitments have not been materialized yet. After the resignation of current Hon. Prime Minister, Mr. KP Sharma Oli, a new exercise has been initiated to form a new government.

While submitting the letter, the team met the key leaders and discussed about the women’s participation issues. In response to the women’s rights leaders, political leaders once again expressed their commitments to try their best to ensure 33% participation in the new cabinet despite of having several challenges there.
