A.Women’s Social, Economic and Cultural Rights Promotion Program: 

Jagaran Nepal feels that the rights of women can be achieved through their empowerment on social, economic and cultural dimensions. Thus, we have been concentrating our program on women’s social, economic and cultural rights. Under this program different activities are being carried out as;

Major Activities:-

  1. Grassroots level women groups participation and mobilization
  2. Skills development and income generation
  3. Saving Credit facility for seed money
  4. Awareness package through health camp on reproductive health and general health
  5. Conceptual clarity trainings on women rights, CEDAW, 1325 resolution, Beijing Declaration, Big seven treaties etc.
  6. Implementation of different kinds of advocacy on women rights and violence against women
  7. Network building among women rights, human rights organizations
  8. Sharing, information regarding human/women rights through IEC materials in local and central level
  9. Women’s economic and livelihood sustain program
  10. Women CBOs' capacity building program
  11. Girl child education program
  12. Adult women literacy program

Achievements:-

  • 49 women groups' around 2000 members from nine districts have clearly understood about their rights. They have started to raise voice against any kinds of violence and injustices against women.
  • Legal counseling has been very effective to make women aware on their lawful rights. Women have started to make their citizenship and register their vital needs.
  • They are become aware on women property rights and started discussing about its provisions.
  • Women have become self reliant through the loan provided from revolving fund. They have been utilizing the loan in supportive forms of small businesses for their livelihood.
  • Monthly interaction on women/human rights, women related laws and provisions have made the women group more aware on the issues so that they have started to put forward their voices on women at least 33% representation at  all layers of social structure.
  • Women are more aware on their heath and hygiene issues.
  • Women group participation on different programs has made them more empowered and provide them the exposure on the current political as well as social issues.
  • 150 girl children have got chance to study in the schools with good performance.

Lessons Learned:-

  • Hard to continue the program due to the donors own interests
  • Work to be done through the equal participation of both male and female
  • Gender concept and the engagement as such has to be implemented within the organization for carrying out the work effectively.

B. Women’s Civil and Political Rights Promotion Program

To protect and ensure civil and political rights of women, Jagaran Nepal has been working on women’s civil and political rights promotion program. The program assists the women in ensuring their civil as well as the political rights so that their participation at policy and decision level can be possible. The program initiates to raise awareness and advocate women in leadership development in the country. It supports to strengthen democratic system and pluralistic society in promoting values and norms for democratic culture. The program visions the meaningful increment of women in political involvement. Under this program different activities are being carried out as;

Major Activities:-

  1. Capacity Building Program for Women Involved in Politics
  2. Advocacy to increase the participation of women in Politics
  3. Carry out the research to find out the real situation of women in politics
  4. Work with women politicians for initiating campaign on violence against women in politics
  5. Work for youth participation in politics
  6. Awareness program on civil and political rights of women
  7. Sensitization of women issues in politics
  8. Sharing of national and international provisions on women rights to political leaders
  9. Analyzing gender issues and advocacy for the same
  10. Role as watchdog in lobbying the political parties for creating gender friendly environment by ensuring proportional representation of women
  11. Facilitate the political parties and the stakeholders to develop gender friendly environment at policies and provisions of their respective sectors like gender friendly manifestos, code of conduct and others.

Achievements:-

  • The number of women in district party committees has been increased to 264. Beforehand the number was 152.
  • The political party leaders expressed their commitment for to increase the participation of women in the party committees at district level interactions in all the program districts.
  •  The media coverage on the program of Jagaran Nepal and women issues is being increased. Some well-known women politicians' issues are being covered by the media.
  • The transfer of skill and knowledge get started from the district level training participants.
  • Prepared the baseline on ‘Status of women in politics’.
  • The positive effect in media developed regarding women in politics and overall women issue.
  • Action plan for the advocacy campaign and skill transfer prepared by the participants.
  • Women leaders were able to create space for women in other governance institutions.
  • Central level women political leaders became familiar with English language and computer classes. Now they can use the term of English effectively and they have opulent knowledge on Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Emails and Internet.

Lessons Learned:-

  1. Demand is there of capacity building program for both men and women political leaders and their sister organizations.
  2. The limited time period is obstacle to build capacity of women leaders and political parties different policies play significantly in leaders' participation.
  3. The capacity building for leaders seems an important area to work.
  4. Advocacy to party leaders (mainly male leaders) is necessary in women issues and other national and international issues.

C. Peace and Reconciliation Program:

Nepal has just overcome from the conflict situation but still we have been suffering from post conflict situation. During conflict situation, the most affected ones were women and children. Considering the situation, Jagaran has continuously been working for conflict affected women and children by providing them the socio-psycho counseling, empowerment support and education for the affected girl children. In this program different activities are being carried out as;

Major Activities:-

  1. Peace transformation sharing program at local level
  2. Conflict affected women support program
  3. Women in peace building process program
  4. Psycho social counseling support program for affected women
  5. Income generating support program
  6. Experience sharing on conflict and peace building mechanism
  7. Training on UN resolution 1325 and other international treaties relating to peace
  8. Conflict affected children support program (School sponsored Program)
  9. Community mediation
  10. Promotion of community dialogue Program

Achievements:-

  • Women peace groups have been formed and they have understood about the importance of groups
  • They have understood the concept of conflicts and have participated in sustainable peace process. Improvement can be seen on their traumatized mentality as they can opine their views without hesitation.
  • They have basic knowledge on women/human rights as they seem eager to participate on such programs organized by Jagaran Nepal. Besides, they became capable in sharing their views on acquired knowledge.
  • Saving habits build up in women groups.
  • They have known about the conflict affected women compensation and legal counseling.
  • The community level women are now well aware on the issue of girl child education.
  • 379 conflict affected children have got chances to study in the schools with very good performances and among them 49 are girls.
  • Training manual developed on the subject matter.

Lesson Learned:-

  1. The need of conflict affected ones should be fulfilled immediately and under it children education and health issues should consider especially.
  2. Massive level of advocacy is needed to participate women in peace making process.
  3. Hard to work on national level peace keeping process.

D.Pro- Women Policy Program:

We all are familiar with the concentration areas of Jagaran Nepal. It is our policy to work on pro women programs. Jagaran Nepal has regularly been advocating for pro women policy in the country and thus it has been organizing different campaigns, pressure creating interactive discussions, lobby and advocacy building different initiations. Under this program different activities are being carried out as,

Major Activities:-

  1. Analyzing pro women policies
  2. Awareness building on women related policies and advocacy for the same
  3. Research on women related policy and programs
  4. Work as a catalyst to make women related policy and its effective implementation.
  5. Advocacy for gender friendly manifestos of political parties

Achievements:

  • The political parties have made commitments in ensuring pro women manifestos for upcoming CA polls.
  • The district level political leaders are confident about the clarity of the concept of CA.
  • The participants of the program who are involved in the major political parties have committed to secure minimum 33% seat reservation for women along with the regular attempt towards the proportional representation in the respective parties.
  • The concerned authorities have committed for building up pressure groups for the political parties so that they can keep a close watch over the forthcoming new constitution and other constitution drafting programs.
  • Signature campaign happened for ensuring at least 33% women's participation at all state mechanism and petition of more than 50 thousands signatures submitted to Interim Legislature Speaker Subash Newang.
  • Pressure to the political parties created to make code of conduct on violence against women in politics by submitting them the 12 points recommending measures to end the forms of violence against women in Politics.

Lesson Learned:

  • The policy level work needs to be carried out with proper attention due to its sensitivity.
  • The timely suited campaign is to be initiated for effective impact in making policy.
  • Policy level work needs to be carried out through combined efforts.

E. Solidarity Building among Human/ Women Rights Organizations and Activists:

Jagaran Nepal believes in solidarity and combined efforts to make the things happen. For meaningful approach of any social endeavor, the combined effort is necessary. Jagaran Nepal has been initiating its programs by considering the phenomena and been concentrating its activities as,

Major Activities:-

  1. Building network within like minded organizations
  2. Best practices experience sharing
  3. Express solidarity through the participation on women rights organizations' initiations
  4. Collaborative activism to eliminate all forms of violence against women
  5. Work in network in the protection of women's human rights
  6. National and International relation building
  7. Network development by building up the capacity of grassroots level women, CBOs and other women groups.

Achievements:

  • Being able to be positioned at the key levels of different national level networks like AATWIN, Human Rights Alliance etc.
  • Organizational active role in each of the major women/human rights campaign
  • We have more than 18 national partners and more than 10 international partners like UNDP, RDIF, CCO, UNIFEM, Global Fund, Embassy of Finland, Action Aid etc.
  • We have been able to initiate and organize different central level advocacy programs with the supports of our networking organizations.

Lesson Learned:-

  • There is less coordination among the organizations who are working for same objectives
  • The grassroots level women issues are not being treated well as such organizations have not got chances to work for.
  • The network of CBOs is necessary to initiate the program effectively.
  • Program sustainability seems difficult to achieve.

F. Institutional Development Program:

Institutional development is another crucial part of Jagaran Nepal. Since its establishment it has regularly been trying its best to focus its activity on institutional development. Within the part of institutional development Jagaran has given special attention to human resource development. Being conscious on human resource as the first essential for employing any development program productively, Jagaran Nepal has been focusing on capacity building of the human resources in the program districts. Under the program different activities are being carried out as;

Major Activities:-

a. Capacity building of human resources within organizations and career development opportunity
b. Functional skill development opportunity
c. Fund raising, Training package selling
d. Infrastructural development
e. Making up of policies, provisions, rules, and strategies to facilitate the working modality for strong internal management/governance
f. Initiation of maintaining internal governance of organization
g. Vision for new leadership development
h. Collection of Human/ Women Rights materials and its dissemination to grassroots level

Human Resource Development (HRD):

The organization visualizes human resources development as a process of organizational development itself and the investment on the same can ultimately bring capability, dignity, creativity and technical skills enrichment. Considering these facts,        Jagaran Nepal has been offering some training as well the human resource development upliftment initiations like,

  • Language Classes
  • IT Course Classes
  • Provide opportunity to take part on different human/women rights programs, seminars and interactions
  • Training Classes for adapting into the packages as required
  • Time to time exposure visit in program districts
  • Equal opportunity for conducting different programs
  • Abroad study opportunity for career development
  • Library accession facility
  • Well documentation mechanism

Achievements:-

  • In Women/human rights realm, Jagaran Nepal has now become an established name inside the country as well the international arena
  • Scenario as such that the Jagaran name comes across when there is women related programs. We have been able to launch our program relation to women rights in five regions from rural to urban areas comprising 23 districts of the country.
  • Able to work effectively in short span of time period.
  • Work has been possible under strong mechanism for administration, communication, programs and other departmental adjustment.
  • Increment in the numbers of staffs
  • Increment in the working districts from 15 to 25
  • Been able to make our own strategy planning/ organizational policy
  • Well equipped office set up with prompt communication system
  • Well managed  resourceful library
  • Well trained and experienced staffs 
  • Adopted the principle of sustainability to achieve the organizational long term vision.

Lesson Learned:

  • Due to maximum organizations presence in the field, hard to accelerate the initiations as expected
  • Donor short term involvement on the programs
  • Problem in program sustainability
  • Instable political scenario hampers the program effectiveness
  • Healthy environment among the like minded organizations is the key to accelerate the program effectively

G. Emerging Program of Jagaran Nepal:

Relying on the vision, mission, goal and objectives of the organization, Jagaran Nepal works for contemporary issues arousing in the country. In emerging issue, Jagaran Nepal has been working on CA and Peace making process programs as;

  • Lasting Peace Process Program for constituent Assembly
  • Women participation in CA
  • Free and fair electoral campaign program
  • Gender friendly manifestos making program
  • Policy making, advocacy on women's participation at decision making level specially in politics
  • Advocacy of women's participation in peace building process

  • IEC materials develop for any campaign and its wide dissemination
