Media Interaction Program on Women in Politics, Local Governance and Election

Aiming at sensitizing the media personnel on women’s issues, Jagaran Nepal (JN) has organized 2 days Media Interaction Program in Dhulikhel, Kavre focusing on Women in Politics, Local Governance & Elections from 30th June to 1st July, 2016. Around 25 media personnel (including Print, TV, Radio and Online Media Houses) along with 5 Women Political Leaders (JN-WIP Advisory Members) were involved in the interaction.

Program was divided into two parts. First day was focused on to explore the gaps in the new constitution regarding the women’s rights and make a document for policy advocacy which was presented to media personnel on the second day. Though the new constitution has ensured 33% women participation in the parliament, it missed to ensure 33% women participation particularly in Diplomatic Missions, Judicial Structure and Provincial Cabinet along with other various local and provincial structures.

Second day was particularly focused on the law making processes in which the participants were informed about the various stages of legislative drafting including pre-drafting stage, drafting stage, ministerial stage, parliament stage and finally publication. Several issues with examples were discussed related to legislative processes and how and where the media and Civil Society can advocate and intervene into the process. In addition, the discussion was focused on the challenges the media houses has been facing to promote women’s issues and how they and the organization like Jagaran Nepal can contribute to minimize/address those challenges.
