National Level sharing meeting organized

Jagaran Nepal and Himalaya Conservation and Development Association (HCDA) organized a "National Level Sharing Meeting on Findings of Baseline Study" on 11th March 2013 at Union House, Anamnagar Kathmandu.

The meeting was organized in the amid participation of EEDG project Advisory Unit Members, representatives of Election Commission of Nepal, IFES, NEOC, National Women Commission, Media and the organizations working in the area of electoral education to share the baseline study  findings carried out by Jagaran Nepal and HCDA with the financial support of Jagaran Nepal.

The meeting was chaired by Ms. Sharmila Karki, Chairperson of Jagaran Nepal. Highlighting the objectives of the meeting Ms.Karki expressed that the project has carried out a baseline study to assess present status on electoral education of project area. Before finalizing the report, we want to share the findings of the study and seek feedbacks & suggestion from your side and we shall give it a final shape so that everyone working in electoral education might use the findings.

President of HCDA Humla Mr. Birkha Bahadur Shahi welcomed to all participants and focused on the objectives of the baseline study in Karnali. The lead researcher Mr. Padma Prasad Khatiwada presented the findings of baseline study. After his presentation, the participants provided the valuable suggestions and feedbacks on findings of baseline study.

Similarly Mr. Komal Prasad Dhamala, Executive Director of Electoral Education and Information Centre(EEIC) Election Commission of Nepal thanked to lead researcher and partner organizations for doing a great initiation i.e. baseline study in Karnali. He clarified that the Election Commission of  Nepal has no objective to distribute national ID cards or voter registration cards. Only we have conducted the voter registration with photograph that shall be helpful to bring fairness and create credibility of election.  Election Commission of Nepal has just conducted its activities at district level. We all should participate and bring uniformity to complete the electoral education related activities. 

Dr.Netra Timilsena, South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE) Coordinator expressed his thanks for conducting the baseline study on electoral education. It is important to aware the people of Karnali on voting rights and that only creates free, fair and credible environment.   

Speaking in the meeting senior human rights activists Shova Gautam, Meera Dhungana, EEDG Project Advisors Gajadhar Sunar, Kapil Shrestha, Shanta Shedhai, Basanti Shahi and representative of IFES Niru Basnet focused on the equal participation and coordination among women, dalits, janajati and marginalized groups while conducting any developmental activities. 

The baseline study was carried out in five districts of Karnali zone under Electoral Education For Democratic Governance (EEDG) project to find out the status of electoral education, democratic governance, election observation, voter registration and human rights in support of European Union. The meeting was facilitated by Mr. Rajkumar Sapkota-National Project Coordinator of EEDG project and total of 35 participants were present in sharing meeting.
