Jagaran Nepal in 16 Days Activism on Violence against Women, 2009

In present context, when Nepal is building new Constitution, women rights must be ensured by the constitution to eradicate all forms of violence against women. Thus, on the occasion of 16 days activism on violence against women, it is necessary to understand the types and cases of violence that Nepalese women face in Politics in New Nepal. Also, for maximum participation of women in politics from grassroots level, the local community needs to understand and realize the importance of women’s participation. Only with the collaboration and cooperative supports women can step forward for sustainable peace and democracy in the country.

Jagaran Nepal has been working in the area of violence against women (VAW) and violence against women in politics (VAWIP) for a long period of time. It has worked in the area of conflict-affected women, capacity building of women groups and political leaders, women’s participation in politics, campaign for women in constituent assembly, social mobilization, psychosocial counselling, women’s access in policy and decision making levels for sustainable peace & good governance etc.

Jagaran Nepal is thus committed to fight against different forms of violence against women and women in politics. Jagaran Nepal has an experience of working in the area of women in politics and advocacy and lobby for women’s participation in politics and policy making bodies in different districts of 5 development regions.

Considering the situation, Jagaran Nepal has decided to accelerate the 16 days activism against gender violence in politics from November 25 to December 10 for this year also.

The activities planned by Jagaran Nepal for 16 days campaign on violence against women are:

1.    Series of discussion with youth politicians of youth women wings, joint struggle committee, inter party women alliance and different organizations on Violence against women in politics. This activity will be intervened in Kathmandu and 35 districts.
2.    Study and analysis of code of conduct of political parties from women’s perspective and advocate for women friendly statue.
3.    Discussion and interaction with youth leaders of different political parties and youth mobilization for the advocacy of Man-engagement on violence against women in politics. The program will be executed in Kathmandu and 35 districts.
4.    Inform and sensitize domestic worker women about the VAW Bill and its efficient prosecution from women perspective. This activity will be carried out in 35 districts of Nepal along with Kathmandu valley.
5.    Discussion and interaction with grassroots level women and sensitize them on the issue of violence against women and existing legal obstructions in the provisions for effective implementation. This program will come into motion in 35 districts and in Kathmandu.
6.    Conceptual clarity meeting on climate change and sensitize women about the issue of climate change, global warming, uneven rainfalls and its multiple implications to women. This activity will be accomplished with the participation of women groups in 50 districts.
7.    Convene programs during 16 days activism with National Women Commission.
8.    Awareness raising and sensitization on violence against women in the participation of professional women like doctors, engineers, advocates, journalists, teachers and professors.
9.    Publication and massive distribution of leaflets and dissemination of white ribbon during 16 days campaign. This activity will come in to existence in 35 districts with the coordination of N-FOWRC.
10.    Sensitization and mobilization of media on violence against women and collection of VAW cases published in different newspapers during 16 days activism. This activity will be conducted at center and district levels.
