A Compilation of the Initiatives Taken by Jagaran Nepal on CA Campaign and Women Participation for Pro-women constitution11 November, 2009:
Jagaran Nepal has been advocating and lobbying for women issues to be addressed in new constitution. For making women friendly constitution it has been carrying out different advocacy and awareness programs before and after CA elections. Before CA elections it organized different campaigns based on CA elections awareness and advocacy like orientation for elections monitoring, Jagaran E-Campaign, Jagaran Hotline service, elections observers’ mobilization, interactions, workshops, media and security personnel sensitization, consultations etc. Similarly after CA elections, it has been working on lobby and advocacy for women friendly constitution. For that it has been carrying out different programs being associated with it alliances, networks, partners and at individual level.
This time the bulletin has attempted to present the compilation of each of the activities carried out by Jagaran Nepal in the process of CA elections and constitution making. The compilation of such events will be supportive for all who are interested in the process of CA elections and constitution making. Moreover, the compilation will provide a glimpse of the events organized by an organization, which will eventually be supportive for analyzing the context of CA elections and constitution making process.
Here, the initiatives taken by Jagaran Nepal on CA campaign and women participation for pro-women constitution have been tried to present in three sections;
1. Advocacy related programs for CA and constitution making
2. Conceptual clarity and skill development programs to women CA members and leaders
3. CA and constitutional process related IEC materials development
1.Advocacy related programs for CA and constitution making:
a. Jagaran Nepal along with other organizations constituting different federations, alliances, networks and women rights related organizations jointly submitted a 26-point women related policy and program document to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on June 24, 2009 to draw the attention of government for incorporating women related issues in new policy and programs. On behalf of different organizations, Sharmila Karki, President of Jagaran Nepal and Secretary General of NGO Federation of Nepal handed over the document to the Prime Minister.
b. With the coordination of Jagaran Nepal, 24 women rights organizations jointly submitted a four-point memorandum along with more than 300 signatures to the Chairperson of constituent assembly Subas Nembang on November 26, 2008 to put pressure on the government to select a woman as the vice chairperson of the CA and ensure at least 33 percent women's involvement at all state mechanisms including all key positions of the state bodies and different commissions and committees to be set.
c. With the joint efforts of DDN partners, different federations, alliances, women rights, human rights organizations, social organizations, Jagaran Nepal, National Forum for Women Rights Concern (N-FOWRC) accompanying a total of 26 civil society organizations incorporating 75 districts office of NGO Federation of Nepal, community organizations, institutions and networks along with women rights related partner organizations submitted women issues to be incorporated in new constitution to the thematic committees of CA on February 26, 2009.
e. Jagaran Nepal Discussed with Seven Thematic Committees of CA for Women Friendly Constitution:
Jagaran Nepal has regularly been advocating and initiating for making the first ever people’s constitution more inclusive, meaningful and effective in the eyes of all people of the country. For making our constitution more inclusive and women friendly, we have been organizing different programs. Through the initiative of different programs, we are facilitating to CA members also for making our constitution more people- friendly in nature.
