WOMEN’S TRIBUNAL ON CLIMATE CHANGE & ITS IMPACT ON WOMEN17 November, 2009:
A rapid increase in the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has taken place over the last decades. This has accelerated the earth’s natural warming trends after the last mini-Ice Age. Variations in day- to -day weather are occurring all the time and that have become part of our life. Most of the disasters in the world are weather or climate related and it causes huge loss to life and property. Thus by the term climate change it is referred to the change in different weather elements as temperature, wind velocity, precipitation, humidity and so on.
Nepal is a small landlocked mountainous country located between the world's two most populous countries: India to the east, west and south and China to the north. Although Nepal produces negligible amount of green house gases, it is very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In Nepal, majority of the people are dependent on agriculture and this sector is adversely affected by the loss of the top fertile soil due to soil erosion, landslides and floods. Therefore, soil loss is one of the major causes of decline in agricultural production. The increase in temperature will adversely affect warmer environment crop. The yield will be reduced for all crops at 4o C temperature rise. Changes in hydrological cycles and the depletion of water resources are some of the top environmental challenges Nepal is facing in the context of global warming. It is estimated that a temperature rise of 4oC can result in the loss of 70% of snow and glacier area due to melting of snow and ice. This melt water will contribute to the faster development of glacier lakes, and this will lead to increased potential for Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) hazards. Even in the vulnerable group, the effect of climate change is more obvious to women especially rural women and deprived group of people as they are socially, economically, culturally and politically discriminated and suppressed for long and their overall livelihood is relied on agriculture and its peripheral circumstances.
Considering the impact of climate change and its devastating effect to most vulnerable group especially women, Jagaran Nepal (which has been working for women rights, peace and governance for a decade) with the coordination of Women in Climate Change Justice (WOCJ) is organizing a “Women’s Tribunal on Climate Change and Its Impact on Women to aware and discuss on contemporary issues of climate change and global warming among the stakeholders belonging to policy makers, government officials, media persons, different professionals, women rights based organizations and 45- district representing women especially the grassroots level ones . The program will be inaugurated by the Hon. Chairperson of constituent assembly Subas Nembang and the outcome of tribunal will try to be submitted in upcoming UN Summit, Copenhagen.
Let’s Come Together at Women’s Tribunal for Discussing on the Issue of Climate Change and to Pressurize Government for Being Responsible with Its Strategic Endeavor to Climate Change and Its Impact on Vulnerable People.
