Interaction on Engaging Men & Boys for Gender Equality Held11 December, 2009:
On the occasion of 61st International Human Rights Day and 16 days activism on violence against women (VAW), an interaction on ‘Engaging Men & Boys for Gender Equality’ was held in Kathmandu on December 10, 2009. The program was jointly organized by Jagaran Nepal and MenEngage Alliance.
At the program Jagaran Nepal President Sharmila Karki, Aruna Rana from UNIFEM and Laxman Belbase from MenEngage Alliance gave insight about the concept of 16 days activism on VAW, concept of MenEngage for mitigating the forms of VAW and the need of youth especially students to initiate Menengage campaign to control the forms of VAW and accelerate the campaign on MenEngage and VAW. Similarly, Kiran Chalise, Jagaran Nepal Communication Officer shared the experience of working on women rights and the issue of violence against women.

The student leaders and civil society took part actively in the discussion and they have suggested the following recommendations to make aware the role of MenEngage to mitigate the forms of violence against women;
• New generation people should be made aware through curriculum development on the role of MenEngage to mitigate the forms of VAW.
• More than 50% women quit politics due to violence against women in politics thus political leaders should also be sensitized on the forms of VAW and their role to mitigate it.
• All political parties should be sensitive to the possible cases on violence against women thus special measures along with code of conduct should be made by political parties to control the forms of VAW in politics.
• Both male and female are doing domestic violence against women thus family awareness and sensitization is necessary to control its forms.
• Attitude and behavioral change is prerequisite to mitigate violence against women thus male should be the co-partner of female to control the forms of VAW.
• Strategic campaign incorporating mitigation, litigation and execution needs to be operated to engage men in reducing the cases of VAW.
• MenEngage to control forms of VAW should be sensitized among the youth and through realization on it we can accelerate the campaign strategically.
• Individual change is necessary to control the forms of VAW thus MenEngage campaign can play role over there.
• To mitigate forms of VAW, we have to make state responsible on it and such awareness campaign should be initiated nationwide.
• Sensitization training should be given to mother groups and all family members to control forms of VAW.
• Well established documentation should be done on the cases of VAW which will compel all to be accountable, credible and initiator.
• Role of media to control the forms of VAW should be sensitized among media persons so that we can accelerate activism and awareness against VAW.
