Women's Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Promotion Program

Poverty is a serious issue of Nepal. Poverty prevails everywhere no matter caste, creed and ethnicity and among the poor, women are even more vulnerable. Women are excluded from decision and policy levels. Due to the patriarchal structure based discrimination, Nepali women's dignity, independence and willpower have severely affected. Women are suppressed socially, economically and culturally and they do not have access and control over the natural resources which have eventually hampered their basic needs and livelihood like housing, food, clothing, education, health, employment etc. Considering these deplorable status of women in Nepal, Jagaran Nepal has been working through different programs for women's economic, social and cultural rights promotion programs.

Activities Carried Out in the Program:  

A. Sensitization Program for Women's Empowerment: Establishing different women groups, Jagaran Nepal has been working in different districts for the sensitization and awareness of groups on women rights, equal development concept, women leadership development, sustainable development and governance, education, women's reproductive health, environment management etc. Similarly, through street drama, signature campaign, trainings, interactions, discussions etc, the sensitization and awareness on women's rights, human rights, social justice have also been carried out.

B. Skill Development Trainings / Income Generating Program: Under Jagaran Nepal there are 49 women groups in nine districts namely Ramechhap, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Kavre, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, Morang and Sunsari. These 49 groups' more than 1000 women have already got skill development trainings. These training include goat rearing, livestock, farming, sweater knitting, small grocery shops' management, local market development and as per the aspirations of the groups.
 
C. Saving and Credit Mobilization Program: Women do not have their self income however they save around Rs 25-200 per month by cutting their unnecessary shopping for the women groups, created under Jagaran Nepal. Through the decision of evaluation committee, the collected amount will be used for credit purpose with 8-10 percent of interest rate. The women groups have been borrowing credit for goat rearing, farming, sweater knitting, agro business etc. These programs have directly supported to enrich the economic problem of the family.

D. Network Mobilization: To regularize the sustainable development of women, women empowerment based programs and carry out the women related tasks mutually, 49 women groups' 11 networks have been established in nine districts. These networks are being functioned according to their annual action plan which normally consists of; Women rights, human rights and related international documents; leadership and equal- development trainings; Women's reproductive health check camp; Adult learning classes, skill oriented trainings and field visits as per need; Interaction programs on the importance of girl child education; Peaceful rally, signature campaign at grassroots for creating pressure in making women friendly new constitution, discussion with thematic committees of CA for incorporating women issues in new constitution etc.

 E. Processing for Cooperative Registration: The gatherings of women have decided to process their saving mechanisms into the form of cooperatives, which will provide security to the collected funds as well as economic empowerment to the women. The women groups of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Morang, Sunsari, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhupalchok and Kavre districts are processing their saving mechanisms into the form of cooperative through its registration legally under cooperative act.

F. 16 Days Activism on Violence against Women: Jagaran Nepal organized scheduled programs in relation to 16 days activism on violence against women starting from November 25 to December 10, 2009 and 2010. The 16 days activism includes street drama, rally, interaction, signature campaign types of pressure creating activities through out its 22 coverage districts along with some VDC of 37 districts.
